Gateway to the high himalayas

The second largest town in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, Almora lies 67km north of Nainital at an altitude of 1,646 metres. Almora was the capital of Kumaon's Chnad Dynasty in the mid-16th century. It was brifly occupied by the Gurkhas and later by the British. It is now known as the culture capital of Kumaon as it is home to some of the region's most important temples, and is thronged by visitors for its Dussehra celebrations and Nanda Devi Mela.

Over the years, Almora has attracted a wide range of visitors- Rabindranath Tagore chose to spend a couple of mounths here in the quiet of the deep green cedar and pinecovered hilles and wrote some of his sweetest verses, Vivekananda stopped by during his Himalayan sojourn and gave some famous discourses; Jawaharlal Nehru served a term in Almora Jail and left behind some accounts. It's important to know before you start out that time has not stood still at Almora.

Bageshwar, the 'Abode of Gods' is an important pilgrim and tourist centre. It is located about 90 kms from Almora on the confluence of the rivers Saryu and Gomti. Bageshwar gets its name form the ancient temple of Lord Shiva set in the heart of the town. Because of its spiritual magnetism, it has attracted many saintly men and numerous patriots who have always been ready to lay down everything for the sake of their revered motherland. The Nilaparvat, situated between the rivers Saryu and Gomti is inhabited by all the 33 crore Gods of the Hindu pantheon, the celestial being like Siddha, Gandharva, Vidyadhar, Urvashi etc. and manu sages. Pindari Glacier the world famous glacier, is situated in the Pinder Valley. During the reign of the Chands, the Shiva temple was constructed at Bageshwar. Bagnath Temple the place for group of temples dedicated to various Hindu deities, is venerated by one and all. During the fairs of Uttarayani and Shivratri, a large number of devotees gather here to attend fairs. Baijnath the historical and pilgrim site, set on the banks of river Gomti in Katyuri valley, is famous for the temple of Lord Shiva as well as magnificent idol of Goddess Parvati. Pindari Glacier the world famous glacier and trekker’s paradise, is situated between the Nanda Devi and Nanda Kot mountains.

Valley of Flowers National Park

Displaying a riot of colour, Valley of Flowers National Park is spread over 87 square kilometers in the Chamoli District in Garhwal Region of Uttarakhand. Situated at an altitude of 3500 m, the national park is part of one of the largest biosphere reserves in India, Nanda Devi. One has to take up a trek of 17 km to reach this national park that begins from Ghangaria Village from where diverts a route towards the famous Sikh pilgrimage site, Hemkund Sahib. This wildlife reserve that is in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves since 2004 offers mesmerizing views and is remarkably beautiful with a lot of species of flowers. Some rare species that can be spotted during the peak season is Brahma Kamal. The waterfalls, landscape, and lush green meadows add to the beauty of this place. Not just flora, Valley of Flowers National Park is also home to many species of fauna, which includes musk deer and red fox. It is during the monsoon months beginning from June, the park gets covered with hundreds of flower species and their aroma soothe and content the heart.

Badrinath

The picturesque town of Badrinath is where divinity meets with the serenity of nature. Located in the Chamoli district in Uttarakhand at the height of 3,133 meters, the pre-eminent abode of Lord Vishnu is one of the holiest of the holy shrines of Char Dham pilgrimage in India. Other Char Dham sites include Dwarka, Puri and Rameswaram. Situated between Nar and Narayan peaks, the pious land of Vishnu also belongs to the Chota Char Dham Yatra in Uttarakhand. Starting with Yamunotri, Gangotri and Kedarnath, Badrinath is the last and most celebrated stop in the pilgrimage tour of Garhwal Himalayas.
